What to wear for family photos: a simple guide

Outfits are the thing families worry about most before a session, and it's simpler than it seems. A few easy rules make a big difference.

Coordinate, don't match

Identical white shirts and jeans can look dated. Instead, choose a palette of two or three colours that sit well together and dress everyone from it. Soft neutrals with one or two deeper tones, such as cream, sage, dusty blue, rust or mustard, look beautiful against red earth and big blue skies.

Keep patterns small and logos out

Large logos, slogans and busy patterns pull the eye away from faces. Small patterns, texture (knits, linen, denim) and solid colours photograph best.

Dress for the ground and the weather

We'll probably be walking on dirt, rocks or grass, so choose shoes you can move in. In the cooler months bring layers; jackets and cardigans add depth to photographs too. In summer, choose light fabrics and bring water.

Think about movement

Dresses and skirts that move in the breeze look lovely, as long as they're long enough for sitting, climbing and the odd piggyback.

Start with one outfit

If you're stuck, pick the outfit you love most for one person, often Mum's, and build everyone else around its colours.
