Family sessions

Your family, as it really is

Family photography in Broken Hill

A family session is an hour outdoors, somewhere around Broken Hill that suits you, in the soft light near the end of the day. No stiff lines in front of a backdrop: I'll give you things to do together, let the kids be kids, and photograph what happens. Bring grandparents, bring the dog. The photographs you'll treasure most are usually the ones where somebody is laughing.

Why it matters

They grow up while you're busy

Most families have hundreds of phone photos and almost none with everyone in them, Mum and Dad included. A session puts you all in the frame, at an age none of you will be again.

I keep things moving and playful, with breaks whenever little ones need them. Toddlers who won't sit still are completely normal; some of the best photographs come from chasing them.

Getting ready

What to wear

Coordinate rather than match: pick two or three colours that sit well together, such as soft neutrals, dusty blues, sage or rust, and dress everyone from that palette. Avoid big logos and busy patterns, which pull the eye away from faces. Comfortable shoes matter more than you'd think on red dirt. Layers are handy in the cooler months, and a spare outfit for little ones is never a bad idea.

Questions

Family sessions: questions

01What if my kids won't cooperate?
That's normal, and it's fine. We work at their pace, take breaks, and use games to get real smiles. A grumpy five minutes rarely shows up in the final gallery.
02Can grandparents or extended family join?
Yes. Let me know who's coming so we plan enough time for each group as well as everyone together.
03Can we bring the dog?
Please do, on a lead if it's a busy spot. Bring someone along to take the dog home after its photographs if it gets restless.
04How long until we get our photographs?
I aim to have your gallery to you within four weeks. If anything holds that up, I'll be in touch with an updated date rather than leave you wondering.
05How many photographs will we receive?
Family, couples and maternity sessions come with a gallery of around 50 or more professionally edited photographs, and every one of them can be downloaded from your online gallery.
