The best places for photographs in and around Broken Hill

One of the questions I'm asked most is where we should have our photographs taken. The honest answer is wherever feels like you, but if you're not sure, here are the places around Broken Hill I come back to again and again, and what each one is good for.
The Living Desert and the sculptures
The sculptures on the hill above the Living Desert State Park are one of the best-known sunset spots in the Far West, and for good reason: the sandstone forms glow at the end of the day and the view runs to the horizon. It's a short uphill walk from the car park, so comfortable shoes are a must. The park has opening hours and an entry fee, and it can be busy at sunset, so we usually arrive early and work around the crowds.
Silverton and the Mundi Mundi Plains
About 25 kilometres from town, Silverton has old stone buildings, weathered timber and wide dirt roads that make wonderful backdrops for couples. A little further on, the view over the Mundi Mundi Plains is about as big and open as a landscape gets. It's perfect when you want that unmistakable outback feeling.
Around town
Broken Hill was the first whole city in Australia to be included on the National Heritage List, and it shows. Verandahs, corrugated iron, painted signs and grand old buildings along and around Argent Street give an urban, characterful feel, especially in the soft light just after the sun drops behind the buildings.
The edge of town
Sometimes the simplest places are the best: red earth, saltbush and a long, low sun. These spots are quiet, close to home and easy with small children, which makes them a favourite for family sessions.
Your own place
A property, a backyard, a favourite track: a place that means something to you will always mean more in a photograph. If you have somewhere in mind, tell me about it.
Whichever you choose, the time matters as much as the place. In the Far West the hour before sunset is almost always the best light, and in summer an early-morning start is often kinder for everyone. Get in touch and we'll work out the right place and time for your session.
