Planning your wedding day timeline around the light

A good timeline is the quiet secret behind relaxed wedding photographs. Here's how I suggest couples plan the day, particularly for weddings in the Far West.
Start from sunset
Find your sunset time first and plan backwards. The hour before sunset gives soft, warm, flattering light; harsh midday sun on red earth gives squinting and strong shadows. If you can, set aside 20 to 30 minutes for portraits in that last hour.
Remember the time zone
Broken Hill keeps South Australian time, half an hour behind Sydney, even though it's in New South Wales. When you're checking sunset times, or booking suppliers and guests from elsewhere, make sure everyone is working from the same clock.
Give getting ready enough time
Hair and makeup almost always run a little over. Building in a buffer means the photographs of the final touches, the dress, and the people you love most aren't rushed.
Plan family photographs with a list
Write a short list of family groupings and name someone who knows everybody to round them up. Ten minutes with a list beats thirty without one.
Think about the season
Summer afternoons in the Far West can be extremely hot. Autumn and spring are lovely, with milder days and beautiful evenings. Whatever the season, shade and water for your guests make a difference.
