How to get natural photos of kids (and dads who hate photos)
19 Oct 2026 · 1 min read
Almost every family has one: a toddler who won't sit still or a dad who'd rather be anywhere else. Good news: neither is a problem.
Don't ask for smiles
"Say cheese" gets a grimace. Games, tickles, races and silly questions get real laughter, which looks far better.
Keep everyone moving
Walking together, swinging little ones between you, a piggyback: movement gives people something to do and the photographs feel alive.
Bribery is allowed
A small treat at the end works wonders. Keep it out of sight until the end, and skip anything that stains.
Give the reluctant ones a job
Partners who dislike photos relax when they're busy: carrying a child, chasing the dog, leading the walk. I'll take it from there.
Let the meltdowns go
A tired five minutes is normal. We'll take a break and come back to it. Some of the most loved photographs come straight after a wobble, when everyone's hugging it out.
